Dark Horse Can't Stop the Signal, Relaunches 'Serenity'
2:01 PM PDT 9/20/2013 by Graeme McMillan

Dark Horse Comics will relaunch "Firefly" with art from longtime Joss Whedon collaborator (and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" artist) Georges Jeanty.

Full article at the link. Of course it's not a new series/movie, but it's the next best thing - so I am really looking forward to this comic! :D

If you're interested in more pics from the recent charity performance of Ian McKellen, with the support of most of the main Hobbit cast, go here: McKellen and friends at the Opera House

For those wanting to join TORn for their Hobbit premiere tour: TORn’s own tour to New Zealand for “The Hobbit” premiere is now open for business, and also read this Quick update to the TORn Hobbit Premiere story

Primary filming for The Hobbit is nearly done?

Aaaand last but very much not least - lucky those who get to go to SD Comic Con! Obviously TORn will be there - The Comic con blitz from TORn has begun - but also some very familiar (or soon to be so) faces: ‘Hobbit’ lineup announced for Comic-Con includes Jackson, McKellen, Serkis, Armitage, Freeman, Boyens!!!
And if that's not enough reason to envy SDCC goers, this Hobbit-unrelated announcement will do it - certainly for fellow Browncoats: Entire Firefly Cast Will Reunite At Comic-Con For The Show’s 10-Year Anniversary. "The cast of FIREFLY will talk about the past, present and future of FIREFLY, 10 years after its debut. " Um, FUTURE?! I mean, there have been comics, but... could it be, after Joss' success with Avengers?! I don't dare hope...

I hope someone will bring news from their Firefly & Serenity Salute this coming weekend, about a new project for Sean... *fingers crossed*

Serenity 2 A New Hope?

In related news, I'm almost packed for Serenity: Infinity - well there's not that much to pack for three days and nights. I had a bit of a struggle to fit all the "liquids" into the little bag because my perfume bottle is a bit big - unfortunately none of the perfumes I have in smaller bottles, nor the BPAL imps I have seemed to suit for Inara, so I went with my old favourite, Deep Red. Not sure yet whether I'll take the laptop or not - though I should have more than enough space, so probably yes. I need to strap everything down and then put the costume on top so it won't get squished too badly. I'm only taking hand luggage this time as I don't want to risk it to get lost or to get crushed in the luggage hold. Taking a suitcase and hand luggage would be overkill for this short a time. :)

Anyway, better go to bed - if I don't get online over the weekend, have a great one everyone, and I'll talk to you sometime Monday! :D

Stupid head is aching - as usual, coming from the neck. I've been traveling today and carrying around stuff (even if the rucksack isn't all that heavy) and sitting on trains a lot is never good when my back is achy already. It's a leeeeeettle bit better now that I just got a short massage and Bowtech treatment from my sister, which will take a while to really kick in. But at least the pulsing right around the base of my skull is already gone. Must get back to the regular treatments for my back!

In Serenity comic news, I found the following details here, from 23 May:

Serenity: Better Days News
More details have surfaced about the upcoming Serenity mini-series: It will take place prior to the movie, but after the show Firefly, and will be reunite Joss Whedon with "Serenity: Those Left Behind" artist Will Conrad.

plot outline - behind cut due to (obviously) mild storyline spoilers )

and this from 5 June:

In an up close interview in Wizard Magazine #189, Brett Matthews, upcoming co-writer of Joss Whedon's Serentity: Better Days mini-series, commented that the series is set to come out in the later half of this year, around September.

Serenity: Special Edition DVD to be released in July. Well that's the news over at The Digital Bits' Rumor Mill . And Joss posts about it (with details!) in the comments section of this Whedonesque blog entry.

Cheers to everyone who emailed us about this.

Joss' comment to above entry:

Yes, fanlings, there is going to be a 2 disc 'Special Edition' released this summer. You know why? 'Cause the 1 disc 'Normal Edition' has sold so well -- so maybe a little self-back-patting is in order for you guys. Way to keep her in the air.

It's too early to be sure what the Special Edition will contain, but here are some things we're going for:

So I woke up after 6am because I had a dry throat. I got up to drink a few sips of water, then went back to bed, and fell asleep again, and proceeded to have this lovely dream:

We were in my bedroom, in the house we lived in from when I was 10 to when I was 22. Somehow it felt like a continuation of an earlier dream - possible that it was from earlier tonight, but I can't remember any details. So Elijah sat at my desk, and I stood beside him, watching as he wrote something on the top piece of paper on a block, which I had scribbled full already, but he was writing between my lines, and it felt just natural to be there with him. It was something like a little thank-you note, though I don't remember anything specific, and I smiled and squeezed his shoulder, kissed his cheek and said "Thank you," and he just smiled. I said what a shame it was that he had to go back already, and he just grimaced. I really wanted to say, "Feel free to come back anytime," but felt I'd overstep my boundaries or put him in a spot, so instead I walked over towards my bed and said "Yeah I know, it's back to work for me tomorrow..." My bed was unmade (nothing special!) and somehow it felt like it was (early?) in the morning. At that moment my Mum came in, dressed for going looking for mushrooms or berries or something - I'd been aware of her and Dad's presence in the corridor somewhere all the time during the dream, getting ready - and she said OK, they'd leave now. Elijah got up from the chair and stretched, and said something to me like, "Well we could do time travel" - it wasn't time travel, but something in that direction. I grinned and asked, "How do you mean?" - and at that moment my alarm went off. *mentally kicks it across the room*

*sigh* But it was a lovely dream... Although it seemed to be morning, there was no indication of us having spent the night together or anything like that, but there was just this wonderful warm feeling... not necessarily that we'd known each other for long or that well, but that we just felt comfortable with each other. Ah... wishful thinking, eh? ;)

ETA: My DVD of "Serenity" arrived! *bounce* How fitting, at least title-wise, since the feeling of this dream was rather serene... :)

ETA2: Oh boy, this is my 1004th post!!!

From the Hollywood Reporter column:

Universal's "Serenity" was the highest grossing picture of the new arrivals, taking in an estimated $10.1 million to place second. The sci-fi actioner, helmed by Joss Whedon and based on his television series "Firefly," carried a PG-13 rating and has a strong niche fan base. The opening was somewhat on the low side of expectations heading into the weekend, but the vast majority of reviews for "Serenity" were favorable and exit scores were positive.

Speaking about the frame's top new performer, "Serenity," executives at Universal felt the results were in line with what was anticipated and hold out hope for growth in the weeks ahead. "The film was right in the middle of expectations," said Nikki Rocco, president of Universal Pictures distribution. "The audience is a niche fan base, and they turned out. And based on the strong exits, the hope now is that word of mouth will help the picture find an audience outside of the core fan base," Rocco said.

"Serenity" attracted more males with 61% of the audience comprising that gender, and skewed slightly older with 52% in the 30 and over category. Scores were slightly above the norm in regards to "definite recommends." Compared with some films in the action sci-fi special effects genre, the estimated cost for "Serenity" was low at $39 million.

And also, A History of Violence:

Of the frame's new wide releases, New Line Cinema's "A History of Violence" could be the most promising in the long run. The drama placed fourth with an estimated $8.2 million from just 1,340 theaters, up from the previous weekend's limited run of 14. Viggo Mortensen stars in the R-rated picture from director David Cronenberg, which had the highest per-theater average among the top-ranked films and has taken in around $9 million so far.

ETA: And this from Variety.com about EII:

Warner Independent's Elijah WoodElijah Wood-starring literary adaptation "Everything Is Illuminated" brought in $190,000 off 60 screens in its third weekend, an average of $3,167 per screen and pushing cume to $462,000.

Audiences fail to find Serenity

Come on people, please please please - if you are remotely interested in Joss Whedon and/or Science Fiction and/or action with a heart and/or conspiracy stories and/or films with a dry humour and/or strong ensemble casts, and if you want to help show Hollywood the strength of even smaller fandoms -

Go see Serenity

Go see it, I promise you won't regret it. You don't need to have watched the series it was based on, you will love it, I promise. So I beg you if you haven't already, go and see Serenity, get your friends and family to go and see it, get their friends and their friends family to go and see it. Fans of the show (we call ourselves Browncoats) will be eternally grateful!
