A Linguist Explains the Rules of Summoning Benedict Cumberbatch

But how is a normal internet citizen supposed to know, when they hear someone say “I just can’t stop looking at gifs of Bombadil Rivendell” that this person isn’t talking about some other actor with a name and a voice and cheekbones? Or in other words, what makes for a reasonable variation of the name Bendandsnap Calldispatch?

Behold Wesley Crusher: Teenage F*** Machine, the Amazon Kindle’s new hottest book

Over the past several days, a certain Star Trek: The Next Generation prose piece has ensnared the popular imagination the world over. It's a story that's been recycled since time immemorial, due to its sheer cross-cultural thematic resonance.

Full article at the link. There's a brief excerpt from the book which is... *giggle*

So I hear the Rapture will go around the world by time zone, starting 6PM local time everywhere? Well I hope people in NZ/Australia etc will be live blogging so the rest of us lagging behind know what to expect. ;)

I can't wait to hear the Doomsday Cultists' justifications when the 21st has come and gone and they're still stuck here with us Shameless Sinners... *snort*

So, what do you do to chase away the blues of the first post-Sherlock Sunday when you're a member/watcher of [livejournal.com profile] sherlockbbc? You play BADFIC BINGO, of course! That is, there's a bingo card with Badfic clichés, and the community members write a story, round-robin style, trying to use as many of those clichés as possible. I myself was mostly refreshing the page regularly, and LOLing like crazy as the merry tale unfolded over the course of late Sunday evening. Good thing that my downstairs neighbours are elderly and hard of hearing - those who've heard me laugh in RL know why! The original thread is here, including reader comments, an illustration, and a link to some text icons based on some of the most sparklingly brilliant - or is that brilliantly sparkling? - scenes. If you prefer not to trudge through the various threads, you can read the compiled and finished version of this amazingly disturbing work of literature here. I guess I should warn that this is NSFW. ;)

Please note that I am unable to take responsiblity for any ruptured organs or muscles, bleeding eyeballs, or other bodily/mental harm if you do decide to click either link and read the story.

Really well done - and the other passengers seemed to get a kick out of it too! *giggle*

Unfortunately I don't have any Star Trek icons, but anyway - an ST audiobook going where none have gone before... *giggle*:

Zachary Quinto Fulfills Your Trek Slash Fantasies

If there's one thing that this year's Star Trek reboot was missing, it was Zachary Quinto reading graphic Kirk/Spock slash. Until now. Click through for NSFW thrills.

Thanks to re-editing Quinto's audiobook version of the movie novelization, the internet now has Spork:

The weather's been sunny and pelasant the whole week, with the snow melting at a good pace, though we still have piles of it even in town. I spent most of the afternoon getting some soil and then, more importantly, seeding most of the flowers that will go on my balcony. \o/ Haven't decided if I'll seed any herbs/salads/veggies at all this year, since I'll be gone for a month this summer. But there's still time for that. Now I REALLY hope that we have truly seen the last of the snow until sometime November/December!!! Well, in Switzerland - I know I'll see some in New Zealand, though I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get a mild winter! :)

Other than that, I was just watching a few Firefly episodes with commentary, and man the melody at the end of "The Message" still gets me. Every. Single. Time. Speaking of - fellow Browncoats may want to check out this Nathan & Alan picture story by [livejournal.com profile] trianne. *giggle*

And where has the time gone?! Need to go wash my hair now... have a lovely evening/weekend everyone!

The above has made it into the Hollywood Reporter:

Net TV Review: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
Bottom Line: Arch hilarity from musical villain.

By Steve Bryant
Jul 16, 2008

Airdate: Premiered Tuesday, July 15, with two more acts on Thursday and Saturday (DrHorrible.com, Hulu.com, iTunes)

If "Fantastic Four's" Victor Von Doom was real, he'd have a YouTube account. That's where he'd record videos of himself shaking his fist as he described his plans to defeat that cursed Reed Richards and rule the world as Dr. Doom. It would be a lot like P. Diddy's blog, but slightly less egomaniacal.

That's the cultural departure point for "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," the online-only (for now), three-part, 45-minute-long musical from Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer") that stars Neil Patrick Harris as a nebbish supervillain.

If you haven't seen it yet - do go to http://www.drhorrible.com/ where the first two acts are online, and the third and last one is coming on Saturday (19th). Joss (and his brothers and the fiancée of one of them, who all developed it with him) REALLY is utterly crazy - hilariously so! Bless Neil, Nathan and Felicia for agreeing to do this - it must have been such fun to do! *giggle*

Night night!

I can't believe someone went and did this... a Captain Jack video set to "Papa Don't Preach" by Madonna. Yes, the song choice was very deliberate! *gigglefit* Contains scenes from Captain Jack's Doctor Who episodes and Torchwood up to 2.09 "Something Borrowed".

ETA - for those interested, this just in from Yep Roc Records:

Heloise & the Savoir Faire's Trash, Rats and Microphones available for pre-order with bonus tracks
[Listen | Buy]

Pre-order Trash, Rats and Microphones at the Yep Roc Web Shop and receive the bonus track "I Think You Suck." The DRM-free MP3 will be be available in your Stash as soon as you place your order!

With a live show described by Disorder Magazine as a "multi-orgasmic experience with heels on," Heloise & The Savior Faire have gained popularity in the UK after making their TV debut on The Graham Norton Show. An electrified collision of late-70's disco-infused dance punk and 80's synth-pop, the band is fronted by the charismatic Heloise Williams and backed by two electrifying dancers (Joe Shepard and Sara Sweet Rabidoux) as well as a full band (James Bellizia on guitar, Luke Hughett on drums and Jason Diamond on bass). The Times UK has described them as "somewhere between Goldfrapp and The Scissor Sisters."

The album features guest vocals by Debbie Harry who recently called Heloise & The Savior Faire her favorite underground band in The New York Times Style Magazine. Harry is featured on the songs "Canadian Changs" and "Downtown.

Been watching the unrated edition of Kiwi horror comedy Black Sheep - ROTFL!!! It's quite bloody and gory in places (obviously, this being the unrated version), but its wicked humour is right up my alley. And the effects are top notch of course, having been done by Weta. :) I guess Black Sheep is pretty much in the tradition of PJ's earlier films - which I've been wanting to catch up on but haven't got around to yet. So a definite recommendation from me, if you like this kind of film. :)
