Here's my little log of my cinema day in Zurich. Slight spoilers for both Brokeback Mountain and Everything is Illuminated.
2006-02-18 Zurich cinema day
16:52 h
Just got out of Brokeback Mountain and got my ticket for EII, am now sitting in the café Papparazzi just opposite.
I knew it. It was the shirts that got me - you know which ones. Just like the one time I saw the trailer. I haven’t read the novella in a while so I wasn’t clearly remembering how Jack got Ennis’s shirt, but I still knew what it meant, and when Ennis found it. I wish that the lights hadn't gone on and everyone started getting ready to leave immediately after the end - I hate not being able to cry. I did a little, but then it's finished and there's the whole have to go and go out among people thing. I'm kind of numb right now. But oh, how beautifully done this film was! Big props to Ang Lee - and everyone involved. Great performances all around. I'm not able to talk about details yet, guess I'll have to let it simmer for a while. Gosh, I guess at the Oscar’s I'll be torn because I'll be rooting for Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix to get Best Lead!
ETA for EII: 1 hour.
20:17 h
Am at the main station, at the restaurant Imagine. I could have caught the 20:12 train if I had run, but wasn't in the mood for hurrying, so I'll catch the last one at 21:12 like planned. I crave something sweet and this restaurant has warm chocolate cake with crème fraiche on their menu, so I’ll try that.
EII was wonderful. Again, I loved all performances - Boris, Laryssa, of course Eugene - and Elijah. Oh he was wonderful, so subtle, saying so much with a look, an expression, the way he stood and walked. And I wasn't reminded of Frodo at any point. As for The Change - it didn't really detract too much for me, though no I still can't see why Liev changed it really. But it still worked. I wish Lista (Was her name even mentioned? I didn't think so.) had told them more about what happened, like in the book, though I guess what they included was enough to give a good impression. Liev made everything in relation to Safran and Augustine much more explicit, where Foer had still left much to the reader to figure out, which I at the same time found frustrating but also liked, so I'm undecided which way I like better, LOL. I don't find that anything is missing by not including Jonathan's invented history of Trachimbrod, as some reviewers did. And yes I cried. Again. Wonder whether I had if I hadn't read the book. I think so.
It was interesting to see that in both movies, there were many people aged 40+, few significantly younger than me. Oh yeah in EII there was a father with his teen-aged daughter and son, and the daughter had two leaflets of EII - I hadn't seen them, missed the girl when the film was finished, and I took a look before leaving, but still didn't find them and there was no one I could ask since there was a queue, drat. Oh well. It seemed the audience liked it, yay, and it was quite well visited.
(Hmmm warm chocolate cake with crème fraiche and vanilla ice cream arrived -yummy!)
Oh yeah - this was the first time I was in a cinema where the floor is tilted up towards the screen. Which is not so good when you have a tallish person in front of you. Thank goodness I didn't have anyone to my right so I could lean over without disturbing anyone, and the young man sometimes leaned away from me too.Not so good for my neck/back, but no major hindrance to my enjoyment. :) Oh yes, and while waiting outside the room before they opened the doors, I could suddenly hear from the one downstairs the familiar melody of DeVotchka's "How it Ends" - the EII trailer was on. *bg*
So, an emotional cinema day in Zurich is coming to an end. Well, it will really be ending be towards midnight when I'll arrive at home. Will see if I'll have the energy to post this then, or if I'll just drop my rucksack somewhere and fall into bed.
ETA 21:10
Am on the train, have made slight revisions to above. Am feeling slightly emotionally raw, but in a good way. I have "How it Ends" on my headphones, will probably listen to some Johnny Cash, or more to the point, Joaquin Phoenix, afterwards. (I have to admit I'm rather addicted to the Walk the Line soundtrack, and if I'd had enough time I would have gone see the film on the big screen today too.) Should do some studying, but I'll have to see if I'm able to concentrate.
Note to self: Set BM DVD on Amazon wishlist asap.
And that's it. :)
Well I only just got up something like 10 minutes ago, have yet to eat anything - and rats I need to go get some breaed but I don't want to, even if the shop is only 2 minutes from here - but I wanted to post this already. Still knackered as I had some weird dreams last night, something X-Files like and I was Scully and pregnant and there was that woman that was after me which we had captured but we let her go because she could give us more clues, and then two other dreams at least which kept me going in and out of sleep. *yawns* Will now go see what I can whip together for a small meal, then tackle my flist. And I really really need to do some studying.
Laters!
