The Hobbit Revisits 3-D Conversation

March 1st, 2010 by DiveTwin | Discuss

Rumors The Hobbit might be filmed in 3-D have been around for some time and dismissed often by Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson . Even last fall, del Toro stated on the TORN message boards:

“As a co-writer and director of this film … let me be very clear one more time: we are not talking about 3D, we are NOT writing the screenplay for 3D right now.

However, he did add this caveat:

If after “Avatar” the market may change and demands are put upon us, etc that is in the future. But if such things happen and we start discussing 3D down the line, I’ll let it be know here at TORN because that’s the proper way of doing things.

True to his word, del Toro has now added an update via the TORN forum:

I wouldn’t read much on it just yet, but now, after all this time, after AVATAR doing the Box Office it did, we have had enquires from above about The Hobbit being in 3-D. No impositions or heavy leaning. Just enquires. Just fulfilling my promise to let you all know if discussions ever started. Cheers, GDT

So while there is no confirmation on filming in 3-D, there is certainly discussions under way. Add your comments to the TORN forums here!

So far, all the movies that have been released here in 3D have also been released in 2D. As long as that continues to happen, I'm good with whatever happens.

I'm sure they'd have it in 2D too, because there aren't enough 3D cinemas yet for them to justify the investment. I don't even know if we have any 3D cinemas in Switzerland... well there's the IMAX, I guess, but apart from that...?

After the success of "Avatar" I think it's close to inevitable. Especially since by the time the movie(s) will come out there will be more than enough 3D screens.

I have no idea how saturated the US cinema market is with 3D screens - but in cinemas where they only have 2D, they can just show the 2D version. They'll certainly need 2D anyway for much of the international distribution.

I also think there will still be a 2D version. Not at least because they need something for the DVD market (though it seems they will even start to 3D-ify the TV soon. The mind boggles). But when the Hobbit movies come out in two years or so I really suspect 2D screens will be a minority in many countries for event movies like that.
Maybe even I will at one point watch a 3D movie. ;)

I just don't see much point in watching a movie in 3D unless the 3D is intrinsic to the story for some reason - which it can't be right now because as you say, they need a 2D version anyway for DVD at the very least. So as long as I get it in 2D, I don't care.
