From a post on Oh No They Didn't! Girl met Ian McKellan in NZ:

He's in Christchurch, New Zealand right now for Waiting for Godot (a play) and my friend and I waited outside to meet him. He said he loves New Zealand and is so happy to be back, and that The Hobbit will hopefully start shooting in January next year! He also said that Sir Ian Holm is sick and won't be doing any acting for a while because he has Parkinson's Disease :(

Also saw somewhere that PJ can only direct if they start soon. Fingers crossed that it's all coming together now!
