It's been over a week now and I think it's high time to put up my thoughts on the film! Tell you the truth: I loved it. Yes it is violent, yes it is flawed, but I liked it much better than I had dared to hope, and I certainly liked it better than many a blockbuster I have seen! Despite what some critics would like to make you think, Elijah is convincing in his role - including the fight scenes! - and Charlie Hunnam, Leo Gregory and Marc Warren all give great performances. If you can - give it a chance and go see it, in the US especially on the opening weekend! You don't need to be interested in football at all because that's not at the center of the film. At its core Green Street (Hooligans) is really about... well, standing your ground. :) Despite the violence, this film has a lot of heart, and we are shown the consequences of that violence very drastically.
I really hope that they'll release a soundtrack, I liked the music a lot. Especially Terence Jay's "One Blood", which is used to great effect. (Pssst... Americans can download it at itunes!)
( Some spoilery talk about memorable bits and bobs behind the cut... )I should add that the second viewing was just as good as the first one - maybe even better because a) I could totally concentrate on it and b) the second time you pick up more nuances than the first time. Wish I could see it again - but I guess my next occasion will be when it comes out on DVD.
Hopefully a report of my whole Edinburgh experience should follow sometime over the next couple of days... though I doubt anyone's interested anymore after all this time, haha. But I'll do it to provide a crutch to my poor goldfish brain anyway, so I can just as well post it here too whenever I get around to it. You can scroll by easily enough if you're bored. ;)
