For completion's sake, one TORn article from yesterday:

So is it Del Toro or What?
January 29th, 2008 by Calisuri | Discuss

There is a lot of buzz in the Tolkien community with the news yesterday that Del Toro was in ‘talks’ to direct the two ‘Hobbit’ films. Unfortunately a majority of the buzz is a case of bad reporting - as many have taken the title from the Hollywood Reporter article (’Del Toro doubles up for ‘Hobbit”) as an official announcement. However, read the first sentence and we see he is not confirmed, only in ‘talks.’ Read more... )

And this one was posted a few hours ago - watch the video at the link:

“Guillermo will direct ‘The Hobbit’…” January 29th, 2008 by Calisuri | Discuss

The following YouTube video confirms that Guillermo Del Toro will be directing ‘The Hobbit’ films. UPDATE We have an additional inside source which says that the deal is NOT signed yet, however it has a 99% probability of happening. The parties are agreed and we should expect an official announcement after the WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) Strike.

See below for the video - The important part starts around :40

Female Translator: Today it is our pleasure to announce something that everyone was hoping for, Guillermo will direct ‘The Hobbit’

(Clapping)

Female Translator: And he will give a small role to (the Spanish translator)

I guess congratulations are in order to Mr. del Toro! He'll no doubt be under close (even closer) scrutiny from the moment this will be officially announced... :)

Barring any earth-shattering or unforeseen changes Guillermo del Toro will direct “The Hobbit.” However, the contracts are not signed and the deal is not final according to a source close to the film.

In a conversation with TheOneRing.net, the source called it a 99% probability that del Toro would be helming the double picture but in Hollywood nothing is final until it is final. The official announcement, which - New Line Cinema will be eager to make when all the t’s are crossed and the i’s are dotted - will come after the writer’s strike is settled.

While it is extremely likely that Guillermo del Toro will direct the adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” and the sequel that acts as a bridge between that work and the epic “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy, it is not yet set-in-stone official, according to the source. All parties on all sides were excited by the arrangement and were eager to get to work.

Still, the deal isn’t absolutely final. How could it fall apart? )

So Sam was in the final race along with Guillermo - and as if he didn't have a background in horror. Damn. Oh well... harthad uluithiad! And I assume that by "New Line felt it wanted as much of the off-camera creative team to be involved as possible" they mean the off-camera creative team from LotR - that will certainly help to keep the look and feel of the films similar to LotR, along with PJ's control over creative aspects.

Like I told [livejournal.com profile] saura_ in the comments of this morning's entry: It's not that I don't like his (Guillermo's) films per se - Hellboy was good and so was Blade II, and I liked Pan's Labyrinth. However they were all stylised in a fantasy/comic film way, and I always felt LotR had a pretty "naturalistic" look - more like a historical drama than a fantasy. I just hope Guillermo will stay true to that philosophy of PJ's for The Hobbit.

PS: TORn have just added a new poll - just look to the right side of above page at the usual poll location: With Del Toro 99% confirmed to direct 'The Hobbit' films, how are you feeling? Yes, I voted "Doh! - I'd prefer someone else"
