Diesel hopes 2009 will also bring the third film in "The Chronicles of Riddick" trilogy.

"David Twohy is writing 'Dark Athena' as we speak," says the actor. "The videogame is continuing full force. It's fun....and I'm very excited about what David is doing."

Vin Diesel Promises Two More Riddick Sequels
Published by Shawn Adler on Monday, August 25, 2008 at 3:18 pm.
Four years after his character Richard B. Riddick last graced the silver screen, and some years after telling reporters that there would be another Riddick film in his future, Vin Diesel told MTV News that he no longer thinks there will one day be a Riddick sequel.

He now thinks there will be two.

ODQ says: WTF Shawn, there was ALWAYS talk of two sequels! *rolls eyes*

“David Twowy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind,” he said of Riddick, the Furyan warrior first introduced in the 2000 film “Pitch Black.” “‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ was presented as a three part trilogy that would answer ‘Pitch Black’ in the same way that ‘Lord of the Rings’ answered ‘The Hobbit.’”

Those are lofty goals indeed for a movie that was very poorly received when it opened in 2004, and had a mediocre performance at the domestic box-office (where it made just $57 million). Diesel, though, is undaunted, insisting that the long space between sequels has nothing to do with convincing others to get on board, and everything to do with wanting to get it right. (To be fair, “Riddick” performed well overseas, and also spawned a best-selling video game which many considered to be better than the movie.)

“Everyone knows I love the Riddick character and I’m always working on it,” Diesel asserted. “It just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precious about it.”

So where will Riddick go next? After taking the throne of the Necromonger King at the end of the last chapter, is there any doubt?

“Sooner or later we all end up in the Underverse,” he said of where we can expect the next chapter to take place, adding in a Riddick-like voice, “Sooner or later.”

I couldn't see how they'd do it next year - Vin would be busy with his Hannibal project? But maybe they could at least get pre-production started... omg they better bring Vaako back and give him a substantial role! They should take some inspiration from certain fan fic out there, hee hee... ;)

Now on to ALIEN VERSUS PREDATOR. Apparently there’s a petition floating around the internet that seeks to draft me as director of the next installment of the series. (It seems my old ALIEN 3 script figures into this master plan, too, in ways that aren’t entirely clear to me.) My reaction is “Hmm.” Flattering? Sure. Realistic? Not so much. See, if I’m going to spend a year of my life (and more if I write it) on the third installment of a science-fiction series, well, why wouldn’t I just do the third installment of my own science-fiction series?

Catch my drift?

*crosses everything crossable*

Gosh, I didn't even know there had been two Riddick movies. I just re-saw the first one on TV a few days ago. I'll have to check out the second one. I would like a third/fourth one, too.

They (Vin and David) seem to be looking at Pitch Black as a kind of background/origin story, and Chronicles of Riddick (the one with Karl Urban) to be the first of the Riddick trilogy. I know many Pitch Black fans weren't so happy with the way they went in CoR - more typical Sci-Fi and bigger-than-life - but I like both films a lot, different though they are.

Oh, I'd love to see a new Riddick film.

Yes, I really like that character. :D

What's not to like! Such a charming guy. ;D

Well he is - in a weird way. :D

Two more! That would be so fantastic! It's probably too much to ask that Karl will be there again, but we can always hope... *fingers crossed*

BTW, video game??

Well they must have him there at least at the beginning of the first sequel, storywise... he's still alive at the end of CoR! :)

You never heard of the existing game? It's called... errr, "Escape from Butcher Bay". I don't do video games, so didn't look into it more.
