Just from looking at behind-the-scenes stuff on the Lord of the Rings sets, it's no wonder something like this happened on The Hobbit.

They work with all manor of materials, and I would imagine a lot of it is flammable or explosive in nature. I'm glad it wasn't a lot worse.
