to Happy Feet beating James Bond to the #1 boxoffice spot, and to PJ being ousted, as well as a little bit about Bobby, in the Chicago Sun-Times - the bit regarding The Hobbit is below, rest at the link:

One thing that's not fine with him is news that a new "Hobbit" film might be made without "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson.

"I haven't spoken to Peter," says Wood, who played head Hobbit Frodo in the acclaimed trilogy. "But I was very disappointed in the news. Peter Jackson is the man who worked over 10 years developing this world. Now, they might move forward on a new project with another director and it won't look or feel the same."

I'm not at all surprised that dear Elijah would be disappointed by this. :-( Man, I sure hope it works out in the end...

I must adit I'm of two minds with this. I would love to have PJ direct, but acknowledge that the HP series turned out OK with different directors. That said, they got to use the same characters and go forward in time, using the same set. The Hobbit is a prequel and involves new cultural groups. These reasons (plus the fact the not all cultural groups were as static as The Shire) may be an advantage to a new director.

But HP doesn't have anywhere near the depth of the LOTR material. Granted, there is quite a timespan between The Hobbit and LOTR, but still... PJ and Fran and Philippa have shown an incredible grasp of the material, and particularly since there will be an in-between film I feel it's important that the same people are behind these prequels as have been behind the LOTR trilogy, otherwise the results will be too mixed.
