Good morning, world, I sure hope you had a better night than me. This tossing-and-turning sleep gets tiring, very literally so... Guess it's really time to get that new mattress. *sigh*

Sam Raimi Talks 'The Hobbit'...Sorta

4/16/07, 7:18 pm EST - Xoanon

From comingsoon.net (via Entertainment Weekly): Entertainment Weekly talked to Spider-Man 3 director Sam Raimi, star Kirsten Dunst, and Sony's President of Production Matt Tolmach about a possible fourth installment and what would happen if Raimi took on The Hobbit.
On the eve of what is expected to be the biggest Spider-Man yet, Entertainment Weekly learns that director Sam Raimi is seriously considering directing The Hobbit—a choice that could potentially leave Spidey 4 without a director and, says Kirsten Dunst, a leading lady.

Raimi's name has been floated in connection with The Hobbit ever since a very public dustup between Peter Jackson and New Line chairman Bob Shaye left the Lord of the Rings prequel without a director. Raimi went on the record for the first time about his potential involvement in the project during an exclusive interview with EW's Steve Daly for the magazine's Summer Preview issue, on stands Friday: "Peter Jackson might be the best filmmaker on the planet right now. But, um, I don't know what's going to happen next for me right now. First and foremost, those are Peter Jackson and Bob Shaye's films. If Peter didn't want to do it, and Bob wanted me to do it—and they were both ok with me picking up the reigns—that would be great. I love the book. It's maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others."

Hats off, Sam, that's very decent of you! Now how about you agree to do it and then get PJ as your assistant director... ? ;)

Speaking of LotR related films, I finally saw The Price of Milk last night - omg I just wanted to squish Karl all the way through! Awwww! Nice butt shot too, hee hee! Oh and that part when he was just squeaking... *giggles madly* Nice to see Lawrence without make-up, even in a small role. I hope I didn't keep my downstairs neighbours awake with my laughter - I finished watching shortly before midnight - but then again they're an elderly couple and judging from the volume they watch their TV on, their hearing isn't so good anymore. :)

I love 'The price of milk'. It's so unlike anything else, with the surrealism, the wacky sense of humor, the tenderness and the dark side of it all. One of my favorite scenes must be when those women are in their upturned car, calmly waiting for help, and you hear the next car slip and turn too. Oh well, there are so many scenes coming to mind now. I think what struck me most was how despite all the weirdness, it's so touching.

Oh yes, very much so! Hahaha yes, that scene with the upturned car(s) was funny. The only thing that I didn't like (though it's no bigggie) is that he had to apologize to her - I mean, who started it all?! :) Still, it's a silly (in a good way), touching, romantic comedy-fairytale.

I still feel that PJ is the best person to tackle The Hobbit but I suppose at the end of the day, Sam could make a very different kind of film that wouldn't detract from or suffer from the LOTR trilogy. One thing I am extremely grateful for is that PJ didn't have this 'falling out' with NL half way through the LOTR production. That would have been unthinkable.

Goodness yes! Yes, I guess since The Hobbit is quite different from The Lord of the Rings anyway, it wouldn't feel like too extreme a breach, and as long as WETA and hopefully John Howe and Alan Lee would be involved, at least the look and feel of Middle Earth and its peoples and creatures would be consistent. But still - I'd much prefer PJ to do it. We'll see...

"It's maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others."

Maybe, but...no. I don't see it as a kid-friendly story necessarily, and if he sees it that way, what will we end up with? I dread to think.

Most people see The Hobbit as more of a children's story than LotR, and yes I guess it is, though like old fairytales, it has a certain darkness to it. If Sam Raimi would end up doing it, knowing his previous projects, I'd not be too worried about it ending up as too much of a kid's film, though. However, I'm still rooting for PJ...

I know The Hobbit is supposed to be a "kids" story, but it's not exactly light fare. Plus, isn't there supposed to be a bridging story between The Hobbit and LOTR? It just doesn't make sense for them to have someone entirely different doing these.

I'm not a big fan of the Spiderman movies. I just don't get what all the thrill is about them, so seeing Raimi doing this doesn't appeal to me. I hope he isn't expecting PJ to phone him and slap him on the back with his approval because I doubt that'll happen. I doubt that I'll ever watch The Hobbit if anyone other than PJ does it.

I don't know if the bridging story is a fix plan, but there was talk of it, yes. And tell Bob Shaye that!

I like what I have seen of Sam's projects, though for many of them he was in the producer's role, not the director. It will very much depend on how this story continues, whether I'll watch it or not.
