Mr. Morrison (who I don't know squat about, besides this article) makes a few good points and he does include a surprising amount of info about fan fiction and its variations, but they're pretty much outweighed by the boatload of errors and misconceptions his article is peppered with:

In the beginning, there was fan fiction: from the four gospels to Fifty Shades by Ewan Morrison - guardian.co.uk

Some examples:

Interestingly, by outshining the heroes Mary Sues reveal a lurking contempt on behalf of their fan writers towards the original characters.
- Or maybe it just reflects the writers' desire to be (super)heroines, so for once they get to save the day and get the guy? You know, like boys imagining they're superheroes?

Also, Mr. Morrison's claim that writers before the invention of copyright can not be considered 'authors' (and therefore derivative works based on works of those writers can not be considered fan fiction) is ridiculous. (Besides - what applies once a work falls back into the public domain?) The only thing that changed was that suddenly writers had an exclusive right to the characters and worlds they created. But just like in the time before copyright, it is still a fact that no writer creates in a vacuum/comes up with something truly 'original' - all stories are in some way built on stories/archetypes/settings that have come before! The mark of a good writer is to combine those elements in a way that captures readers.

Behold Wesley Crusher: Teenage F*** Machine, the Amazon Kindle’s new hottest book

Over the past several days, a certain Star Trek: The Next Generation prose piece has ensnared the popular imagination the world over. It's a story that's been recycled since time immemorial, due to its sheer cross-cultural thematic resonance.

Full article at the link. There's a brief excerpt from the book which is... *giggle*

I have been remiss in sharing this Time article about fan fiction, which actually gives a well-balanced overview of fan fiction, its authors, copyright questions and different authors' reactions to it. Well worth a read.

Sadly, so does one of my favourite Sherlock fan fic series - the John/Sarah/Sherlock epic by [livejournal.com profile] saathi1013. I recced the first two chapters in my John/Sarah/Sherlock fics rec post just before Christmas, but since then she has posted more chapters - and today, the final one. *sniff* So for those one or two on my flist who might be interested, here is the whole series (see chapter links for full details and warnings).

The Lorem Ipsum series )

So sad to see this series end... and there is one scene in the final chapter that just about had my ovaries explode and REALLY makes me want to get a glimpse into our threesome's future. But I guess I'll just have to imagine it myself. :) Seriously though, it's a wonderful ending to an exceptional series. I just want to squish the three of them, and squish them, and squish them, and never let go! They are three very distinct, different characters, who each relate to each other differently, and they create such a wonderful whole. Their relationship feels so real - it's not perfect, and they have issues, but they make it work. I am utterly in awe of [livejournal.com profile] saathi1013's writing. Oh, and there should eventually be a PDF of the fic including the gorgeous art that [livejournal.com profile] mariemjs is creating for the series (check out the three first ones here - there will eventually be one per chapter)! I can not wait!!! ♥♥♥

In honour of finally getting a John/Sarah/Sherlock icon, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] mirnell:

As mentioned in my "Fandom Year in Review" meme/survey/thing, I like the "pairing" of John/Sarah/Sherlock, and since Christmas is considered the holiday of love and sharing, it seems fitting for me to post a list of my favourite Sherlock fan fics focusing on the three of them! I hope one or two of you will enjoy these too. Rating and author's summary are included with every link, please check out the individual stories for spoiler and other warnings and notes. Some stories are John/Sarah and John/Sherlock, or John/Sarah and John&Sherlock friendship, but the focus is always on the sharing.

Share the joy. )

If anyone has other John/Sarah/Sherlock fics to rec, I'd be grateful if you drop a link here! :)

Sooo, I had mentioned here that my prompt for [livejournal.com profile] 221b_slash_fest had been claimed? Well the story, written by the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] warriorbot, has been posted in the meantime (as the very last one of the fest - thank goodness the other stories were all so good, or the suspense may well have killed me), and it's kinky and HOT HOT HOT. Details and link, in case anyone is interested:

Title: Sound and Fury
Author: [livejournal.com profile] warriorbot
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Written for prompt #: #4

LJ Name: ourdramaqueen
Scenario From Sherlock's POV - Sherlock's brain is in desperate need of drugs, but he's interrupted by John just when he's about to take them. Sherlock lashes out at him with embarrassment/frustration, and somehow they end up having very kinky sex, during which John surprises him with his trust and willingness to give him what he needs. For the first time ever, Sherlock can truly let go of his control - and finds John to be a much more effective drug than "anything called recreational".
Kinks: BDSM, particularly spanking, bondage, biting, cutting/blood play, breath control/choking
Squicks (be specific!): scat, watersports
Three additions: dirty talk, neck kissing/sucking, debauched!Sherlock
Highest rating: The higher the better :)

Rating: NC17
Word count: 3800
Warnings: Drug use, Fistfights, (Thoroughly Consensual) BDSM,
Summary From the prompt: “Sherlock's brain is in desperate need of drugs [but he] finds John to be a much more effective drug than anything ‘recreational.’”

So, what do you do to chase away the blues of the first post-Sherlock Sunday when you're a member/watcher of [livejournal.com profile] sherlockbbc? You play BADFIC BINGO, of course! That is, there's a bingo card with Badfic clichés, and the community members write a story, round-robin style, trying to use as many of those clichés as possible. I myself was mostly refreshing the page regularly, and LOLing like crazy as the merry tale unfolded over the course of late Sunday evening. Good thing that my downstairs neighbours are elderly and hard of hearing - those who've heard me laugh in RL know why! The original thread is here, including reader comments, an illustration, and a link to some text icons based on some of the most sparklingly brilliant - or is that brilliantly sparkling? - scenes. If you prefer not to trudge through the various threads, you can read the compiled and finished version of this amazingly disturbing work of literature here. I guess I should warn that this is NSFW. ;)

Please note that I am unable to take responsiblity for any ruptured organs or muscles, bleeding eyeballs, or other bodily/mental harm if you do decide to click either link and read the story.

Thanks to re-editing Quinto's audiobook version of the movie novelization, the internet now has Spork:

What happened to [livejournal.com profile] abundantlyqueer? I wanted to reread some fic of hers that I had in my memories, only to find her journal has been deleted and purged. o_O I didn't have her friended but went to her LJ to look for new fic every now and then, and I thought it wasn't that long ago that she was still around. I hope she's okay? And is her fic archived anywhere?

Just saw the following headline on the TORn news feed:

The Uruk-hai Project

Hands up who else thought of/thought it had to do with [livejournal.com profile] ladysunrope's story first thing! :D

Also Tolkien/LotR related, this might be of interest to some of you:

Tolkien Sculpture Appeal Goes Global

Anyone else find it ironic that the Ent they want to create is made of metal?

For no reason at all, I just now remembered that last week or so I came across pictures of an actor who I thought might also work as Thero in the "Night Runner" series... however I have forgotten the name (hadn't heard of him nor seen him before, from what I could tell), what he was in (I believe the pictures were of a specific project), and where and how I came across the pictures in the first place. Oh well.

Well now here's your chance - particularly (but not exclusively) for the Pervy Hobbit Fanciers among us. :)

OK, so while in NZ I bought a night cream containing manuka honey. It seems that it's actually doing me some good - hallelujah! - so I wanted to google around to see if it would be possible to get it and the other creams from the same series online. I find the website of the company producing that cream, yay, and am browsing around their online shop innocently when I scroll down to the end of this page...

*blinks at product name*

*ends up ROTFL*

*has countless scenarios for fics going through her head immediately*

Any of the writers on my flist feel inspired...? ;)

[livejournal.com profile] baranduin dropped this little link in her LJ... and now I desperately crave a hot little (or not so little) fic focusing on Elijah's arms... I mean it's not like I only just noticed how strong they look but just...

*stares at pics again*
