Andy Serkis: Martin Freeman was unpredictable on The Hobbit - Very reminiscent of what Steve Moffat and Mark Gatiss said on one of the Sherlock S1 DVD commentaries - that for every take, Martin did it a little differently, providing the director with a whole palette from which to pick from, and making it seem as if every time was the first time that he did the scene.

Nope, that's just... a rash, yes. Right.

Sir Ian McKellen has returned to Wellington with plans to drop in on an old stomping ground - the hobbit hole at Bag End.

The revered British actor, who played the wise wizard Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, is in New Zealand with the Royal Shakespeare Company to play the title role in King Lear.

He intends to catch up with old friends while in Wellington, and Peter Jackson has invited him to stay at his home in Wairarapa.

"He kept the set of Bag End, which was Frodo's house, and set it up for guests with running water, so I'm going to spend the night there," Sir Ian said yesterday.

"It'll be the one the hobbits were in which made them look small, so it'll be big enough for humans."

Inside the Hobbit House
Appreciating a modern-day cottage based on mythical literature

by Deb Silber

Asked to design a fitting repository for a client’s valuable collection of J.R.R. Tolkien manuscripts and artifacts, architect Peter Archer went to the source—the fantasy novels that describe the abodes of the diminutive Hobbits.

“I came back my client and said, ‘I’m not going to make this look like Hollywood,’” Archer recalled, choosing to focus instead on a finely-crafted structure embodying a sense of history and tradition.

The site was critical too—and Archer found the perfect one a short walk away from his client’s main house, where an 18th-century dry-laid wall ran through the property. “I thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful to build the structure into the wall?”

Not only did the wall anchor the cottage, but stones from another section were used in the cottages construction. “It literally grew out of the site,” Archer said.

Perhaps stranger things have happened in Tolkien’s world, but few houses in this one go to such lengths to capture a fictional fantasy in the context of architecture. Here are some details.

Eco-friendly housing, Frodo-and-Sam style

And the author shows very good taste in her, err, choice of pairings: Seriously, doesn't it look like the kind of place where you could open the door and expect to see see Elijah Wood and Dominic Monaghan inside sporting prosthetic foot fur? ;)

Check out the builder's website - they're planning to build a village using this method, in Pembrokeshire/Wales!
