Digital Monopolies A Bigger Threat Than Piracy, Says Miramax CEO

Miramax CEO Mike Lang and Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos gave a keynote talk at the MIPCOM conference. The two discussed the challenges they face in the continuously changing digital world. Both agreed that piracy is not much of an issue as long as you give consumers what they want. Digital monopolies, such as Apple’s dominance in the music industry, are a far bigger threat.

Some people are just born thin

Too thin? Blame your parents. Now there's evidence that inherited genes can make you skinny — just as there is evidence for inherited obesity. While most of the research into body fat so far has been into the genetic causes of obesity there's now strong evidence that it goes the other way too.

Click the link for more. Yes I'm definitely in the "thin" category, with my BMI having been around 18/18.5 since I stopped growing. I eat what I like (within reason) and until I'm full, and yet I can't seem to gain weight. My parents, around the time they had my siblings and me, were probably more in the "normal" range, though at least my mother certainly more towards its lower end, so inheritance probably at least plays a part in it. I always figured my weight or lack thereof was mostly part of my body's makeup/genes.

Thanks for all your nice comments to yesterday's post! *group hug* I'm staying home today mostly because I still need to get more food into myself. I hardly had any food on Saturday, only little more yesterday - I didn't get hunger feelings and therefore only ate when my stomach started cramping up because it was so empty. And it's not like I have much reserve to draw from, after all - one of the disadvantages of being petite. But I'm feeling much better and more normal by now; for lunch I had a banana and some bread with a little bit of butter and strawberry jam - omg actual TASTE! - and that seems to have gone down well. Now I need to go see what I can dare have for tea. I'm actually feeling a bit peckish, which certainly is a good sign.

I don't know if it was the fish sticks or something else that I ate on Friday, but just before going to bed, I had to throw up, and kept having to every 1 1/2 to 2 hours all through the night - from the third time on it was just bile, of course. I tried to drink some ginger tea early Saturday afternoon, but that came back up too, so I just went back to doze as I was feeling very sluggish anyway. In the late afternoon I was finally able to drink some water, then tea, and later ate a bit of quark with cereal. I've had more water and tea and am now eating some bread - my stomach is so empty it actually feels like it's cramped - and have just made some chicken broth, which should help me get back some of my strength too. I'm totally knackered, as you can imagine, and didn't get a single thing done that I had planned.

Of course this also ruins the plan for one of my coworkers coming for dinner tonight - I don't trust my stomach to take a full meal yet. Oh well, we'll reschedule. Now if only I could find my massage ball again, to help me get rid of the crick in my neck that I caught while lying in bed so much...

It seems I've been not-quite-well since that work trip to Berlin back in October. In fact, since then I've been off sick at least a day almost every month, including just now Monday and Tuesday. Just when my almost-cold which I'd had since said work trip was over for good - I get a new cold! And quite a bad one too. Saturday towards the evening I felt it starting to come on, and by the time I got up on Sunday it was full blown. I guess this is the kind you call a head cold - it really felt as if my whole head was congested. I'm feeling much better today (at least relatively speaking) - thank goodness our team meeting yesterday was moved to the coming Tuesday, or I would have come in for that - but I am very tired. You see, my throat was a bit ticklish last night and every time I started dozing off, I got woken up by a coughing fit, so in the end I got about 3 1/2 hours of sleep. *yaaaaaaawn* We'll see how long I'll make it today.

My boss is also sick and should really not be here, but the Board of Directors is visiting tomorrow and Friday and he has stuff to prepare, so he's toughing it out and taking Aspirin. And he asked me this morning if I was really fit enough to be at work, bless him! It's probably the coughing - that often sounds worse than it is. It's just a dry cough from a slightly irritated throat/larynx, so nothing serious, and I'm hopeful that it will pass quickly and not relocate to my lungs. *everything crossable crossed*

I really should post a work-and-other-stuff update, but it's all sort of convoluted and involves a lot of backstory that I haven't mentiond here yet, so I don't really know where to start! Eh, we'll see.

Grrrr

You know this cold really isn't anywhere near the worst I've had - it's more sniffles than a real cold - but in combination with That Time of the Month it sure is exhausting. And the most annoying thing is my right eye, which just keeps running and doesn't take well to staring at the computer screen for any length of time as it's pretty light sensitive. Which, you know, if you're working on the computer all day, is not ideal. Oh and did I mention my innards acting strange? I don't think that I've picked up a bug in Romania, but more that I've not been sleeping well at all since coming home. I have noticed before that under certain circumstances, lack of sleep can somewhat disrupt the latter part of my digestive process. Plus my neck/shoulders/back are all messed up again, which is why I now really need to go ahead and exchange that bloody mattress.

So yeah, tired and grumpy ODQ, and I can't even really enjoy the nice weather we currently have.

My Liberal Identity:

You are a Peace Patroller, also known as an anti-war liberal or neo-hippie. You believe in putting an end to American imperial conquest, stopping wars that have already been lost, and supporting our troops by bringing them home.

Not really a surprise there. :)

Neck is better - I got a jab in the hip from the doc which should release its muscle-relaxing and soothing effects bit by bit - but not all good yet. Will have to keep up the treatment with my sister and be even more careful to take regular breaks from sitting at the computer than I usually am.

This weekend was supposed to be catchup weekend for various things - like typing up at least part of my RingCon report and posting the rest of the pictures and the video clips. But apparently my neck had other plans. I just hope it won't get as bad anymore as it was this morning, when I could hardly turn around in bed or get up. You never realise just how much you use those neck/shoulder muscles for almost every move until they're hurting! After my sister's Bowtech treatment at least the shoulder muscles relaxed again, but right at the neck (along the cervical vertebrae) they're still incredibly tight, particularly at the bottom, and I have to be careful when moving my head. So I guess it'll be off to the doc's tomorrow to see what he says... *sigh*

Well at least I finally continued watching S3 of Robin of Sherwood. Only three more episodes to go. *sniffsigh*

A meme

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] samena and [livejournal.com profile] lilithlotr. The result is... well in a way it's correct because I dislike too much routine, but I'm not *that* adventurous either! :D

The Reincarnation Placement Exam )

Could it be end of the workday already? I'm really in need of some good long sleep... I did get some the last few nights, but not enough of it yet to make up for the lack from the previous weekend and beginning of this week!

The plan was to install my new harddisc on the desktop computer at home, over the weekend. But no thanks to a rather nasty little draft that started as soon as one of the windows in our office was open last Thursday and Friday, I ended up with a cold which left me pretty much useless for the whole weekend. So I spent most of the weekend in front of the TV, watching all of Firefly and then Serenity, the latter with commentaries. And therefore I'm still computer- and internetless at home. Feeling better today (though tired, due to not sleeping properly these last nights) but now of course I'm coughing, and a very dry cough too, for which I'm taking tissue (mineral) salts. I'll see how soon I'll feel up to working on the computer - possibly tonight, possibly not.

Last but very much not least, if you have good vibes and/or healing thoughts to spare, please send them [livejournal.com profile] ismenin's way, who's in hospital due to breathing problems.

Will meet up with [livejournal.com profile] shirasade tomorrow to go see John Howe's exhibition in St-Ursanne, and to get his autograph - and Alan Lee's. *bounce* It will mean spending most of the day on the train, but I'm very much looking forward to it, also because St-Ursanne is a medieval town, so I hope I'll have time to take a few pictures with my shiny new camera - also of the statues they have put all over town, based on John's artwork. You can read John's thoughts on the end of the all-summer exhibition and series of events at his blog.

I just hope that the headache I woke up with today will have gone by tomorrow morning. That would be hell on the train. If it's not gone by sometime in the evening I guess I'll ask my sister if she could give me a brief Bowtech treatment - that always helps.
